On Tuesday, President Chegi defended the end of the statute of limitations for some crimes, such as sexual abuse of minors, saying there should be a “parliamentary consensus” on the issue in the current context of complaints within the Catholic Church.
André Ventura, who spoke to reporters at the party’s headquarters in Lisbon, said prosecutors and the Judicial Police (JP) “should respond quickly” to complaints received, but they face the problem of statutes of limitations for crimes.
“The solution that we see here, that the whole parliament could or should have reached a consensus, was to reach a parliamentary consensus to end the statute of limitations in criminal law for this type of crime,” Ventura defended.
Stressing that this rule will only apply to future cases, Ventura noted, however, that this would be a “very important sign.”
Asked if the party intended to introduce legislation on the issue at the start of parliamentary work in September, Ventura said yes, defending the end of the statute of limitations “for the crimes of murder, terrorism, genocide, rape and sexual assault.” minors.”
Ventura added that this issue should also be enshrined in the draft constitutional revision, which the party intends to submit in September.
In connection with this project, Chega organizes on September 11 and 12 in the “center of the country” several “constitutional days”: an event that Ventura called “a discussion of the parliamentary group and the party” on this topic, which aims to bring together “several professionals and representatives of civil society” .
“We will all be sleeping in anticipation of the PSD constitutional revision draft,” joked Ventura, who elaborated that the constitutional revision draft would have goals of “reintroducing life imprisonment in Portugal”, “defining a mixed health model”, reducing the number of deputies, or even “maximum restrictions , expressed in the constitution, for the IRS and the IRC”.
According to Article 286 of the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic, “Amendments to the Constitution are adopted by a two-thirds majority of the current deputies.”
At this press conference, the Chega leader also pressed for the resignation of Health Minister Martha Temido, listing a number of hospital services with limited hours of operation or currently closed in the country and calling for the intervention of the President of the Republic. Marcelo Rebel de Souza.
