The Portuguese Environmental Protection Agency (APA) on Tuesday advised against swimming at five beaches in Matosinhos, in the Porto region, due to a source of pollution caused by a fire at a paint factory in Lesa da Palmeira.
Swimming has not been recommended at the beaches of Aterro, Azul Conciña, Boa Nova Senhora, Fuselhas and Lesa da Palmeira until “water analysis shows values are within control parameters,” the National Maritime Administration (AMN) announced on Tuesday in a statement.
At 10:00 pm on Monday, APA and Matosinhos’ public health department were contacted following a fire that broke out in the early evening at a paint factory in Lesa da Palmeira.
The Matosinhos Civil Protection Service has alerted the authorities to the possibility of a source of pollution in the sea due to the rapid displacement of sewage through a rainwater system into a stream flowing into Praia Azul.
“After the alarm, units of the local command of the marine police and the captaincy of the port of Leishoynes, as well as the Northern Maritime Department, immediately arrived on the spot and discovered the presence of a source of pollution in the area. hard-to-reach places, and later a specialized company was called to collect polluting materials,” the AMN press release explains.
He added that the fire, which started around 7:45 p.m., was contained and extinguished on Tuesday afternoon by several fire brigades in Matosinhos, Gondomar and Maia.
The Chamber of Matosinhos also issued advice in a statement not to swim at the five beaches “until further notice”, also calling for “understanding” of the citizens.
