The current favorite to succeed British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has once again lashed out at the media. During an election campaign appearance in Darlington, northern England, on Tuesday evening, the conservative politician accused journalists of asking their questions in a “left-leaning manner”. Some media would “put down the country”. When audiences cried out that “the media” was responsible for Boris Johnson’s downfall, Truss indirectly agreed – she didn’t want to contradict the “excellent audience”.

The acting foreign minister had previously accused the media of misrepresenting her plans – for example for salaries in the public sector. In fact, in these cases, she herself had changed plans or retracted statements.

As a farewell in Darlington, Truss apologized to the event’s host, TalkTV journalist Tom Newton Dunn, for the media scolding. “It’s cheap – and you know it,” he said.

In fact, Liz Truss, who is well ahead of her rival and ex-Finance Minister Rishi Sunak in polls among Conservative party members, enjoys broad support in the British conservative media.
