Refugees : Romania: New arrest after the death of 39 migrants in a truck

31 men and 8 women from Vietnam died in agony while escaping in a truck in the UK. Another smuggler in the case has now been brought before a magistrate.

Almost three years after the agonizing death of 39 Vietnamese migrants in a truck in the UK, another suspected human trafficker has been arrested.

The 48-year-old Romanian, who is said to have helped organize the accident transport, was tracked down in his home country and brought before the magistrate, said the police headquarters in Bucharest. There is an international arrest warrant from Great Britain against the man. A court in Bucharest should now decide whether to extradite him to the British authorities.

The dead were discovered in a truck in Grays, east of London, on October 23, 2019. They were 31 men and 8 women from Vietnam. They had each paid more than €10,000 to be taken to the UK. According to experts, the temperature in the sealed container rose to 40 degrees during the crossing from Belgium to England. The migrants had no chance of survival.

In the matter, more than 25 people had already been sentenced to long prison terms in Belgium and Great Britain. The British investigators accuse the Romanian who has now been arrested of negligent killing and supporting illegal migration.
