A year after the Taliban took power, Afghanistan is experiencing what is probably the country’s worst humanitarian catastrophe. That describes a report published on Wednesday by the aid organization Save the Children.
According to this, 97 percent of all Afghan families have difficulties finding enough food for their children. Households headed by women in particular suffered from poverty. It is precisely in these areas that girls are now particularly at risk of child marriage. “Children are being robbed of their childhood,” says Inger Ashing of Save the Children, summarizing the situation in the country. “Parents watch their children die.” The economic collapse will be exacerbated by sanctions against the Taliban.
Girls are hit particularly hard, the report shows. According to this, 26 percent of all girls surveyed show signs of depression, among boys it is 16 percent. Despite pressure from the international community and Afghan civil society, the Taliban have closed schools for girls from the seventh grade onwards in large parts of the country. Many children also have to drop out of school to contribute to household income or because parents cannot afford school supplies, the report says. However, Save the Children also emphasizes that even before the Taliban took power, Afghanistan was one of the worst places to be a child.
