It is a topic that lies hidden: child abuse. Criminal offenses depicting the sexual abuse of children have increased, according to current statistics from the Federal Criminal Police Office. Only one percent of the attacks are known.
“We have to talk more about these cases,” says stern reporter Matthias Bolsinger in the 337th episode “important today”. He has spent a long time researching child abuse – a topic that he says is one of the most memorable of all research. Lügde, Münster and most recently Wermelskirchen – in North Rhine-Westphalia large crime complexes of cruel child abuse have become known in recent months and years. In the Wermelskirchen case, the main accused 44-year-old offered his services as a babysitter in order to be able to approach the victims. He then exchanged child pornographic images of unimaginable brutality with dozens of men, the youngest child is said to have been only a month old. A case that gives reason to research the extent of these crimes.
Child Abuse: A Common Fact
“This fact is incredibly widespread and not only on the fringes of society, where many suspect it or would like to repress it,” says Matthias Bolsinger. “The investigators tell us that they can hardly keep up.” According to estimates by the World Health Organization (WHO), there are one or two children in every class who have themselves experienced sexual violence. According to Matthias Bolsinger, cases like in Lügde or Wermelskirchen were a big bang, an eye opener for many investigators and politicians. It was also clear to the federal government’s abuse commissioner, Kerstin Claus, with whom Matthias Bolsinger spoke: Today the visibility is greater, we take a closer look. In North Rhine-Westphalia, the investigative capacities have been increased – “that’s why it’s no coincidence that more is now coming to light there”.

Talking about perpetrators to identify perpetrator strategies
When it comes to dealing with this topic properly, says Matthias Bolsinger, the most important thing is to listen. To believe the children and to pay attention as soon as changes in children become noticeable. But you also have to talk about the perpetrators, “because we need to know about perpetrator strategies.” According to the stern reporter, a major problem with these acts is that we consider them so terrible and therefore want to keep them away from us. That people actually cannot believe that it could be a relative or a neighbor, for example, but in the case of abuse complexes – as in the Wermelskirchen case – it always comes out that the perpetrator comes from the immediate environment.
