Evacuation: Spain takes in more refugees from Afghanistan

A year ago, the Taliban took power in Afghanistan. More refugees have now arrived in Spain who previously worked for the Spanish government on site.

About a year after the last US soldiers withdrew from Afghanistan, Spain took in almost 300 more vulnerable people from the conflict country now ruled by the Taliban. A plane with 294 Afghans, coming from the Pakistani capital Islamabad, landed at the Torrejón de Ardoz airbase near Madrid late Wednesday evening, the Spanish government said on Thursday night.

It is therefore about former employees of the Spanish authorities and their relatives who fled from the Taliban to neighboring Pakistan. The Afghans were received by Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares. The refugees now come first to the initial reception center in Torrejón de Ardoz. According to official information, this increases the number of people seeking protection from Afghanistan who Spain has evacuated to around 3,900.

Spain declared the evacuation of former employees in Afghanistan to be over at short notice on August 27 last year – one day after two bloody attacks in Kabul. More than 70 people died in the attacks, including numerous US soldiers.
