One hears the argument again and again: We should finally talk more about political content. Our author disagrees. For him, the person behind the candidate for chancellor counts. And not the fine print in the party manifesto.
From Frank Schmiechen
It always sounds so good. And so important. Politicians should finally talk about content! Stop! No. Contents are overrated. Because we know the party programs, all the empty phrases, the self-evident facts and messages of the parties well enough. When it comes to elections, something else matters most: Can you recognize a real person behind the practiced pronouncements? Because the Germans don’t choose a program, they choose a person.
But that doesn’t mean that we should get rid of the candidate discussion on television. On the contrary. In direct encounter, the electorate learns a lot about the people behind the candidates. Are you quick-witted? Or rather boring? Are you able to react coolly to attacks? Do you keep your nerve? Or do they seem like bad actors?
Chancellor with a smart, quick mind
The second highest office in Germany does not need a candidate who can rattle off his party program without errors. That does not bring Germany forward. We need a smart, quick mind. A Chancellor who is able to make the right decisions very quickly in highly explosive situations. What has just happened in Afghanistan cannot be brought under control with party programs.
Yes, you can make fun of the fact that there are commentators who deal with the clothing or body language of the political staff. But one could also take note that 90 percent of a person’s messages are conveyed non-verbally. On this non-verbal basis, choices are made or marriages are concluded. Not because of details.

Laschet is not serious, Scholz is stoic and Baerbock is aggressive
• It will therefore be of no use to Armin Laschet if he refines the Union’s program or brings a team on board. The laughter during the flood disaster and his strange lack of seriousness send the surveys ever further downhill.
• The stoic Olaf Scholz, on the other hand, scores with his unmoved facial expression and demonstrative serenity. This imperturbability works. A chancellor has to be able to do that. The highly political question of whether he goes to bed with his leftists, on the other hand, leaves many people indifferent.
• Annalena Baerbock can only score partially with her passion, which she demonstrates in the areas of climate protection and child poverty. Many voters find them aggressive and cheeky.
The next time someone says they should finally talk about the content, just refer to the party programs. You can study it on the internet at any time. If you really want to. Anyway, I choose a person. Less of a program that will be crushed in the coming coalition negotiations anyway. And that’s why I’m not voting for any of the three candidates.
