Prime Minister António Costa declined this Friday to comment on the scandalous recruitment of Sergio Figueiredo.
“As you know, members of the government are free to conclude contracts, and I do not comment,” Costa stressed.
During a visit to a kindergarten in Amadora, António Costa stressed during an interrogation of journalists that he does not comment on “how each member of the government organizes his teams.”
The prime minister also said that he was responsible for “running his cabinet”.
“I will not talk about specific cases, if there is any doubt, the competent authorities will deal with them. Otherwise, this is a normal rule. I have to focus on what is important for the country,” he stressed.
“I do not comment on the composition of the members of the government. As we know, members of the government are free to appoint to their positions and I do not comment,” António Costa said in statements to reporters on the sidelines of a visit to the Luis Madureira Kindergarten in Amadora (Lisbon).
Asked how closely the role of Sergio Figueiredo is being scrutinized, Costa replied: “Like every other member of every other office. There are also several people in my office who collaborate with me, from legal advice to economic consulting to communication consulting, from a wide variety of fields.”
“Everyone should try to do what is part of his duties. I have to manage my cabinet, I don’t manage the cabinets of other members of the government,” he said.
After nearly forty minutes of interrogation on various topics of current national affairs, the prime minister was again asked about the Sergio Figueiredo affair, to which he replied: “This matter is already dead and buried.”
