Health: chief medical officer for transnational corona standards

How should the corona pandemic be dealt with in the coming months? The federal and state governments are discussing this these days. The chief medical officer warns of “cacophony” – and suggests a traffic light system.

The medical officers are pushing for uniform corona specifications for autumn and winter. “We need cross-state standards for when which rule applies,” said the chairman of the Federal Association of Physicians in the Public Health Service (BVÖGD), Johannes Nießen, of the Funke media group. “Hard, clear steps” are necessary.

With the same infection situation, it should not happen that you drive across the state border from Bavaria to Baden-Württemberg and sometimes have to wear the mask in the restaurant and sometimes not. “Such a cacophony is not conveyable to the citizens.”

Nießen suggested a kind of traffic light system. With an incidence of less than 500 and less than 1000 Covid intensive care patients nationwide and no worrying indications from the wastewater analyses, one is probably still in the green area. At higher values, masks would have to be prescribed for indoor events. “If the incidence is over 1,000 and more than 5,000 Covid intensive care patients, the traffic light should turn red,” said the doctor. “Then no more exceptions to the mask requirement should be possible and a decision must be made on further measures.”

The federal government has presented proposals for the coming months, which are now being discussed with the federal states. On August 24th, the draft for a protection concept should pass the cabinet. It would then be the turn of the Bundestag and Bundesrat.
