Health: Bavaria’s health minister calls for rapid care reform

Almost 40,000 skilled workers will be needed in Bavaria alone by 2040. The Minister of Health responsible for the Free State sees investing in care as a task for society as a whole.

The Bavarian Minister of Health, Klaus Holetschek, calls for more money for care and for employees to be relieved of bureaucracy. “Keeping qualified nursing professionals and recruiting new ones is a key task,” said the CSU politician on Sunday. “Time is running out.”

The personnel situation is already tense – but in 2040 more than a quarter of the population will be older than 65 years, and in Bavaria alone almost 40,000 more nurses will be needed. Therefore, the federal government must quickly and comprehensively reform the legal framework for long-term care and thus also enable more staff.

“There must be a willingness in society as a whole to invest more money in nursing care,” demanded Holetschek. Non-insurance benefits of long-term care insurance would have to be financed through taxes and surcharges for overtime, weekend and night work would have to be more tax-relieved. At the same time, care must become simpler, more flexible and less bureaucratic: “We cannot afford that those in need of care, caregivers and care providers lack the time to take care of the best possible care because they are busy with structures that are too complicated.”
