Churches: Nicaragua: Catholics celebrate Mass after ban on processions

The Catholic Church is in a difficult position under President Ortega’s authoritarian government in Nicaragua. A procession was not allowed to take place – now the community in Managua invites you to mass.

Amid rising tensions with President Daniel Ortega’s authoritarian government, worshipers in Nicaragua have attended a mass in the capital Managua in large numbers after a procession was banned. This was seen in a live broadcast on Facebook on Saturday (local time). “I know that no one can take our love for the Virgin of Fatima from us,” Cardinal Leopoldo Brenes said, according to the Nicaraguan newspaper La Prensa. “Catholics have lost their fear,” wrote the paper.

The police had been stationed around Managua Cathedral since the previous day. The Archdiocese of Managua announced on Twitter on Friday that the police had banned the procession planned for Saturday in honor of the Blessed Virgin of Fátima for security reasons. The Archdiocese called for people to come to Managua Cathedral for a mass to pray for the Church and Nicaragua.

The authoritarian Ortega government recently closed around 100 non-governmental organizations and a number of church and local radio and television stations in the Central American country. Police have been preventing an anti-government bishop from leaving his residence for more than a week.

The United States and other American states sharply condemned the human rights situation in Nicaragua in view of the increased persecution of critics on Friday.
