Hamburg: Police: 58 climate protectors taken into custody during actions

Last Saturday they had blocked train tracks in several places in Hamburg and concreted themselves on a bridge with their arms in a bathtub on the roadway. The police take stock.

The Hamburg police took 58 people into custody last Saturday during the blockade campaign by left-wing climate protectors. All have since been released, she said. The officials also found the personal details in 526 cases. The number of criminal proceedings has not yet been determined because some of the advertisements are still being written.

Participants in a protest camp at the Altonaer Volkspark had blocked railway tracks on the Kattwyk Bridge and at other locations in the port of Hamburg. On the Köhlbrandbrücke, demonstrators had concreted themselves in with their arms in a bathtub on the roadway. Police engineering units detached them from the concrete and led them off the bridge. At the Kattwykbrücke, the officers used pepper spray, batons and water cannons.

The group “Ende Gelände”, which the Hamburg Office for the Protection of the Constitution counts in the environment of the violent extremist interventionist left, criticized that the police had acted with “massive violence”. Numerous activists were injured by punches and kicks. In addition, the operations management refused the blockers drinking water when the temperature was over 30 degrees, prevented medical care from paramedics and confiscated sun protection.

Criticism of the police also came from the green parliamentary group. “From my point of view as a parliamentary observation, the police operation around @Ende__Gelaende was disproportionate in a number of points,” tweeted the spokeswoman for science and universities, Miriam Block.

Police spokeswoman Sandra Levgrün expressed concern that climate activists often presented their attacks as a legitimate means of protest. But it must be clear: “The actions come to an end where criminal offenses are committed.”
