The FBI has searched ex-President Trump’s home. But an important document that forms the basis for this is unlikely to be released by the Justice Department.
The US Department of Justice does not want to release the document on the basis of which ex-President Donald Trump’s property in Florida was searched.
A publication would affect future investigative steps and probably the cooperation of witnesses, several US media reported on Monday (local time), citing a letter from prosecutors that had been filed with a court in South Florida.
Accordingly, the ministry has asked the court to keep the document under lock and key. The New York Times and other media had previously officially requested publication.
The documents are the basis for the search warrant used by the FBI to raid Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach earlier this week. According to reports, the judge who signed the search warrant has yet to make a final decision on whether to release the document.
The basis of the search was the suspicion that Trump could have violated the Espionage Act, among other things. In Mar-a-Lago, the FBI reportedly found and confiscated sets of documents classified as top secret.
In a first statement after the raid, Trump accused the FBI of “stealing” his passports on Monday. According to the “New York Times”, the Justice Department has now admitted mistakes and contacted Trump’s lawyers to return the documents, some of which have expired.
