Several western nationals are currently being held in Iran. Observers see a connection with a revival of the Vienna Agreement in the signal from Tehran.
Iran has signaled its readiness for a potential prisoner swap with the US. “We are ready and have announced this several times – also independently of the nuclear agreement,” said foreign ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani, as reported by the Isna news agency. He accused the United States of not having cooperated so far in this regard.
Observers see a connection between the statements and a possible agreement in the nuclear dispute and a revival of the Vienna Agreement of 2015. Even then, after the agreement and lifting of sanctions, there was an exchange of prisoners. Several Western nationals are currently being held in Iran. Most prisoners have a second Iranian passport. They are accused of espionage and endangering national security. Among them are two American citizens with Iranian passports who have been in the notorious Ewin prison for nearly seven years for espionage. Two German-Iranians are also imprisoned.
