Olaf Scholz is currently the most prominent and popular politician and, as a candidate for chancellor, the social democrats’ hope. However, the party is weakening in elections and in polls.

As Federal Minister of Finance, Scholz put together aid packages worth billions. He advocates an international agreement on minimum taxes for multinational companies. He has spoken out in favor of a financial transaction tax on stock exchange transactions. He does not want to increase the retirement age.
Scholz was born on June 14, 1958 in Osnabrück, grew up in and currently lives in Potsdam. Since 1998 he has been married to Britta Ernst, the education minister of Brandenburg and the love of his life.
The 63-year-old Scholz joined the SPD at the age of 23. He studied law and became a lawyer. From 1998 to 2001 and from 2002 to 2011 he was a member of the Bundestag. In 2001 he became the Senator for the Interior of Hamburg. Then Secretary General of the SPD under Gerhard Schröder. From 2007 to 2009 he was Federal Minister for Labor and Social Affairs. He was first mayor of Hamburg for seven years until 2018. Scholz has been Federal Minister of Finance and Vice Chancellor since 2018. At the party chairmanship he had to admit defeat. Now Olaf Scholz wants to become Federal Chancellor.
