When Friedrich Merz became party leader, there was a lot of talk about the CDU becoming completely different: more Merz, less Merkel. So far, however, he seems fixated on the center – with which Merkel has won four elections.

On September 18, 2017, I would have given anything to be able to read minds. The CDU Baden-Württemberg organized a reception on the occasion of Wolfgang Schäuble’s 75th birthday. Angela Merkel came and met Friedrich Merz for the first time in a long time before the event began. In 2002 she ousted him from the presidency of the Union faction and later became chancellor.
The scene made me think back to an encounter with my first girlfriend’s rival many years ago. We met by chance after the theoretical driving test. He passed, I failed. So very similar to Merkel and Merz 2002.
