For years the EU has been trying to create clear relations between Serbia and Kosovo. A new crisis meeting was also unsuccessful. But Brussels does not want to give up.
A crisis meeting with the EU has not brought a solution to the conflict between Serbia and Kosovo. “Today there is no agreement,” said EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell after hours of talks with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and Kosovan Prime Minister Albin Kurti in Brussels. “But we will not give up.”
Both had agreed that the talks should continue in the coming days. There is still time until September 1st.
“I think that both President Vucic and Prime Minister Kurti understood that there is no alternative to dialogue to solve this problem,” Borrell said on Thursday. He described the tensions as symptoms “of the broader issue of unresolved status” in Serbia-Kosovo relations.
In his statement, Borrell appealed to the responsibility of both top politicians. With a view to the Russian war against Ukraine, he spoke of a “critical phase for Europe”. “This is not the moment for growing tensions. It is time to seek solutions and resolve long-standing issues.”
At the same time, he made it clear to Vucic and Kurti that joining the EU should remain the long-term goal of both countries, according to Borrell. The first step on this path is a solution for the current situation.
