Nuclear disarmament in exchange for economic aid: North Korea is not very enthusiastic about South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol’s proposal for a barter deal and responds harshly.
In a first reaction, North Korea has rejected new proposals from the South Korean government for economic aid in exchange for its nuclear disarmament as absurd.
The rejection came in the form of a statement from North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s influential sister, Kim Yo Jong, who scathingly attacked South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol for his move, calling it “really simplistic and still childish”. Yoon should have kept his mouth shut, the ruling Labor Party official was quoted as saying by the state-controlled media on Friday.
In a speech marking his first 100 days in office on Wednesday, Yoon offered the strictly isolated neighboring country massive economic aid if it starts dismantling its nuclear weapons program.
Kim called her country’s nuclear weapons a matter of honor. “No one trades their destiny for corncakes.” Yoon made the wrong assumption that his plans could persuade her country to take denuclearization measures. His initiative is therefore the “level of absurdity”.
By “denuclearization,” the United States and South Korea mean the complete dismantling of North Korea’s nuclear program, which has repeatedly made international headlines in recent years. By sticking to the program, North Korea is also accepting tough international sanctions that have hampered its economic development for years.
