Church: Cardinal Ouellet denies allegations of sexual harassment

He is said to have touched a woman inappropriately on several occasions. But the Canadian Cardinal Marc Ouellet and influential man in the Catholic Church is not aware of any guilt.

Senior Cardinal Marc Ouellet has called allegations of sexual harassment false. He “firmly denies” any inappropriate behavior towards the woman and considers the interpretation and dissemination of the allegations to be defamatory, the 78-year-old Canadian said in a statement distributed by the Holy See.

“If a civil investigation should be opened, I intend to take an active part in it so that the truth will be established and my innocence will be recognized,” he said.

A woman sued Ouellet in Canada because, according to media reports, he allegedly touched her inappropriately several times between 2008 and 2010 – for example on her back and buttocks. Ouellet was then archbishop in the Diocese of Québec, in French-speaking Canada, and the woman was an intern there. The head of the Catholic Church, Pope Francis, announced on Thursday that there was not enough evidence for an investigation under canon law into a sexual assault.

Cardinal Ouellet is an influential man in the Catholic Church. In 2010 he was appointed by Pope Benedict XVI, who is now Emeritus. to head the dicastery for the bishops – a central and powerful authority in the Vatican, which takes care of the appointment of churchmen, for example. Ouellet belongs to the inner circle around Francis and was traded in 2013 as a possible successor to the throne of Peter.
