The daughter of right-wing ideologue Alexander Dugin has been killed in a Moscow attack. Daria Dugina was driving a car when it exploded on a highway and burst into flames.
According to Russian authorities, the daughter of right-wing nationalist ideologue Alexander Dugin was killed in an alleged assassination attempt near Moscow. “On August 20 at around 9:00 p.m. (…) an explosive device, which was probably installed in a Toyota Land Cruiser, exploded at full speed on a public road. The car then burst into flames,” said a first for the Moscow region. “The driver who was at the wheel died at the scene of the accident. The identity of the dead has been clarified – it is the journalist and political scientist Darya Dugina,” said the national investigative committee on Sunday.
The 29-year-old was considered a fervent supporter of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. According to reports by Moscow media, she was on Britain’s sanctions list for spreading propaganda and false news about the invasion ordered by Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin on February 24.
According to investigators, Dugina’s car exploded while driving in a suburban settlement in Moscow region. “At the moment it is already clear that the explosive device was placed under the floor of the car on the driver’s side,” said the investigative committee on Sunday afternoon. Chairman Bastrykin launched a murder investigation.
What role does Alexander Dugin play?
The father of the dead, the radical author Dugin, has repeatedly been described by the Western media as a whisperer or even as the “brains” of Russian President Putin and as the idea generator for the attack on Ukraine. But in contrast to this portrayal, Dugin rather takes concepts and ideas that have long shaped Russian society and works to popularize them abroad as well. In a 2014 interview, he himself admitted that he had never met Putin in person. His dismissal from the renowned Lomonosov University also indicates a lack of patronage on the part of the Russian authorities.
The Finnish scientist Jussi Backman wrote in a that his ideas are undoubtedly in line with the thoughts of the modern Russian political elite, but from the government’s point of view he is at most one of the unofficial ideological attachés, while his past as well as the complexity of his theoretical constructions , for the Kremlin are rather a burden.
Was the target of the attack in Moscow Dugin himself?
According to a report by the Russian news agency Interfax, Dugin and his daughter attended the patriotic festival “Tradition” together on Saturday, where the ultra-nationalist gave a lecture entitled “Tradition and History”. Telegram channel “112” speculates that the explosive device could have been placed in the parking lot near the property. According to eyewitnesses, Dugin and his daughter planned to return to Moscow together. But at the last moment they changed their plans and Dugin followed his daughter in another car.
Videos show him stunned at the scene of the accident.
The family friend, Andrei Krasnov, confirmed this to the . “This was the father’s vehicle,” he said of the exploded car. “Daria drove another car, but today she took his car while Alexander drove away a different way. (…) The way I see it, Alexander or probably both together was the target,” said Krasnov.
Kyiv denies any involvement
The attack sparked an outcry among Russian nationalists and pro-Russian forces in Ukraine. “The terrorists of the Ukrainian regime tried to liquidate Alexander Dugin and blew up his daughter…in the car,” commented the leader of the self-proclaimed separatist stronghold of Donetsk.
Several Kremlin loyalists immediately blamed Kyiv for the attack. Russian Senator Andrei Klishas demanded: “The terrorists must be destroyed, both the executors and the clients, no matter where they are.”
Ukrainian Presidential Advisor Mykhailo Podoliak has meanwhile rejected Kiev’s involvement: “Of course, Ukraine has nothing to do with yesterday’s explosion because we are not a criminal state – like the Russian Federation – and certainly not a terrorist state,” he said during a television appearance Sunday.
