Nervousness is growing in the coalition in view of the approaching winter. Many politicians give tips on how to save energy. SPD General Secretary Kevin Kühnert reacts allergically – and justifies it with the pictures in his head.
It’s still warm outside and hardly anyone has to heat their private apartment at the moment. But that is likely to change soon: winter is approaching and no one can predict exactly what costs people will have to face given the drastically increased energy costs. The only thing that is clear is that it will be expensive.
In order to prepare citizens and get them used to lower consumption at an early stage, several politicians have made recommendations. Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck, for example, published energy saving tips for everyday life through his ministry and advised Germans, among other things, to take shorter showers.
His party colleague Winfried Kretschmann, Prime Minister of Baden-Württemberg, went one step further and even called for people not to take showers: “Even the washcloth is a useful invention.”
Kevin Kühnert and the images in his head
Such interference in people’s private lives does not go down well with Kevin Kühnert. “In practice, poorer people have known how to save in everyday life and how hard it is, and not just since Putin’s war,” said the SPD general secretary in an interview with “T-Online.de”. “That’s why we in the SPD are holding back from giving savings tips to the population.” He finds it “weird” when people with a five-figure monthly income explain to others how to save. “Most of the time, they know that much better.”
Consequently, the SPD politician did not want to answer the question of whether he had had a shorter shower since Robert Habeck suggested it. He does not comment on his shower behavior, says Kühnert. “The comments from various politicians on this subject triggered images in my head that I didn’t want to have at all.”
After all: He didn’t want to go ahead without a good example either: He revealed that savings were being made in the SPD party headquarters where possible. “We flush with collected rainwater, have photovoltaics on the roof and have reduced the lighting on the building.”
