Experts suspect that the corona pandemic in Germany will be over in spring 2022. In Denmark, on the other hand, the pandemic is already over and people are living a normal life again. The German government must finally learn from Denmark, says our author.
We learned to live with the coronavirus. Tests and vaccination certificates are part of our everyday life. But we want (and have to) at some point in a state in which the virus does not determine our everyday lives. This wish is more than understandable. But when will that be?
The epidemiologist Alexander Kekulé said to “Markus Lanz” that the “pandemic endgame” had been reached. His colleague Klaus Stöhr assumes that the corona pandemic in Germany will be over in the coming spring. And the head of the National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians, Andreas Gassen, said: “I assume that Corona will end in spring 2022.”
Denmark’s vaccination campaign is going better
Nevertheless: There are still a few months until spring and a difficult winter is ahead of us, but due to the high vaccination rate it will probably not be as hard as the last one.
You can be jealous of our Danish neighbors. In Denmark, the corona pandemic is no longer classified as threatening or critical for society. Restrictions to protect against the virus are as good as abolished, hardly anyone wears masks anymore. And all of this without exponential growth in the number of infections. They remain at a relatively constant level or only increase slightly.
All of this was made possible by many factors, above all the high vaccination rate. In 72 percent of the total population is already fully vaccinated, while it is 61 percent. It was also tested like crazy, sometimes even more than half of the population in a week.
Digitization helped Denmark in the fight against Corona
But it is not just the vaccination quota that has helped Denmark to survive and overcome the pandemic better: There is also one that is tax-financed and digitalized. There are electronic health records, prescriptions, referrals and health portals for citizens. In this way, the elderly and vulnerable people could be reached more quickly during the vaccination campaign.
Digitization also helped Denmark control the infection situation. Early on, the country relied on a “Corona passport” with which one could go to restaurants or to the cinema.
The new government must learn from Denmark!
Of course, you don’t know how Denmark will get through autumn and winter either. The government is therefore vigilant and ready to take action again if necessary.
But the numbers in Denmark speak for themselves. Therefore, the new Chancellor should go to Copenhagen as soon as possible together with the responsible ministers for health and digital. Actually, the whole new cabinet should get into a coach and be shown in Denmark how it can be done better. The current federal government should have done that.
The sleepy digitization and the snore-nosed attitude towards it must finally be overcome. Denmark has successfully proven that it has many advantages. The new federal government must tackle this as quickly as possible. The incumbent has already slept too much and wasted away in the corona pandemic.
But the German population can also take their neighbors in the north as an example: Without a high willingness to vaccinate and a positive attitude towards digitization and the health system, the success of the country and the return to normal would have been difficult to achieve.
