Chega President Andre Ventura said on Tuesday he retains political confidence in Gabriel Mite Ribeiro and indicated that the outgoing vice president would remain an MP for the party.
“I expressed to MP Gabriel Mita Ribeiro my confidence in his work, my confidence as an MP, and I understand that all remaining issues seem to be resolved,” he said at a press conference.
The far-right party leader and MP had a meeting scheduled for this afternoon at Chega’s national headquarters in Lisbon, but a few minutes before the scheduled time, Gabriel Mita Ribeiro’s adviser told Lusa that the MP would not be attending “because he understands that in the conditions are not met at this time” and that André Ventura was informed of his decision “by email”.
Ventura told reporters that Mita Ribeiro “had a feeling” that the leader would want “to take away his political credibility as Chega’s deputy.”
“This is not about that. Both the president of the party and the leadership of the parliamentary bench remain confident in the work, in the representativeness of the deputy Gabriel Mita Ribeiro,” he assured together with the leader of the parliament, Pedro Pinto. and also as one of the “vices”, Rui Paulo Souza.
That trust “is maintained under these circumstances as long as they don’t change,” he added.
“At the moment, I have information that Gabriel Mita Ribeiro will continue to work as Chega’s deputy,” the chairman of the party also said.
MP Gabriel Mita Ribeiro announced on Monday that he had asked for the resignation of Chega’s vice president after being removed as research office coordinator.
