SPD health expert Karl Lauterbach and CDU chancellor candidate Armin Laschet have a long-distance feud. Lauterbach had heavily criticized Laschet on Friday on Twitter. The NRW Prime Minister shot back sharply in a speech on Saturday.
In three weeks, the voters will be asked to the polls and things are not looking good for Armin Laschet from the CDU. He is currently more distant from his goal of succeeding Angela Merkel than it has ever been since his candidacy.
On Friday he had one of his numerous election campaign appointments, this time in Erfurt. There was all sorts of headwinds for his politics from the audience and then a small moment of shock. Suddenly a man jumps on the stage and walks towards Laschet. Security guards arrive, but von Laschet sends them away again with demonstrative serenity. The visibly upset viewer without a mask wants to talk about Corona above all and comes very close to Laschet. The CDU man therefore repeatedly puts his hand on his chest and pushes him back a little, indicating that he should be a little calmer, please. After the man has said what he wanted to say, Laschet asks him to leave the stage again, which he does – and then shouts more things from the auditorium.

Laschet celebrated for serene reaction
Laschet received a lot of encouragement and praise for his calm and confident way of dealing with the interferer. As it turned out later, the man was a supporter of the so-called lateral thinker scene. That called the SPD health expert Karl Lauterbach on the scene. He shared the scene on Twitter on Friday and wrote snappy: “Incomprehensible. Armin Laschet lets himself be yelled at by a lateral thinker without a mask at a distance of 20 cm. This is not close to the citizens, it is simply stupid.”
Laschet then picked up the ball on Saturday, during his speech at the party conference of the CDU Brandenburg in Potsdam. The candidate for chancellor spoke of one “aggressive and divided” Land and that the situation is too serious to just shout at and report on the incident in Erfurt. The man was allowed to present his concerns. “I did not share two things and contradicted him directly. The third was no vaccination for children in schools. And I could promise him that”, says Laschet. “I think that’s how we have to deal with it.”
“It is astonishing that Armin Laschet does not understand the problem”
But because there is an election campaign, he did not miss the opportunity to send a small tip back towards Lauterbach. With his statement “poison” this the climate. “If we no longer listen to people, if we no longer give answers, then the social climate will be even rougher than it already is today.”
Thereupon Lauterbach took up the topic again via Twitter, wrote: “It is astonishing that Armin Laschet does not understand the problem. I haven’t criticized him for allowing himself to be yelled at by a lateral thinker. Except that he lets himself be yelled at without a mask from a distance of 20cm. I talk to lateral thinkers. But don’t let me endanger it”, said the SPD man.
Curiously, a prominent TV presenter interfered in the remote duel via Twitter. Football expert and cult commentator Frank Buschmann wrote Lauterbach’s first tweet, the “This is not close to the citizens, it is simply stupid” ended, simply: “Mr. Lauterbach, it’s good now!”
Another swipe at Scholz
Laschet criticized another SPD politician in Brandenburg. His competitor Olaf Scholz, who is clearly ahead of him in recent surveys, had previously advertised vaccination with the following words: “50 million are now vaccinated twice. We were all the guinea pigs for those who waited until now. That’s why I say as one of these 50 million – it went well! Please take part”, said Scholz in an interview with NRW local radio stations. For this Laschet gave him a sharp attack: “Humans are not guinea pigs in this country.” Scholz should distance himself from such terms.
In surveys, the SPD has recently overtaken the Union with 25 percent, which comes to 20 to 22 percent. In several surveys, Scholz is clearly ahead of Laschet, even in a personal comparison.
