Finland’s Prime Minister Sanna Marin was filmed celebrating. The video made waves across Europe – and sometimes caused sharp criticism. But how does Finland actually deal with a young woman as head of government?
A wave of young politicians seems to be stirring up the political world. An important example of this is Sanna Marin, the Prime Minister of Finland. At 36, she is much younger than German Chancellor Olaf Scholz at 64 – and many seem to be working on the very issue of age. Marin is repeatedly criticized because of her age. For example, a video of her partying exuberantly appeared just recently. “Today important” editor Mirjam Bittner therefore speaks in the 346th episode of the podcast star-Editor and Scandinavia expert Rune Weichert.
“Sanna Marin is quite a popular politician in Finland”
Finland’s policies are often praised in the media. “Finland belongs according to the World Happiness Report one of the happiest countries in the world,” explains Rune Weichert at the beginning. This is partly due to Sanna Marin’s progressive leadership, because her focus is “on equality between men and women” and she also likes climate and environmental issues very important. But there are also people who view Sanna Marin’s style of government rather negatively. “Of course, there is always criticism, as you can see from the example of the party videos that have appeared, where it was then said, you can Actually not present as Prime Minister,” explains Weichert. At the same time, he also emphasizes “that you tend to look at Sanna Marin because you say, okay, on the one hand she’s very young, on the other hand she’s also a woman.”
Marin shows on social media: I’m like you – and not everyone likes that
Especially from Germany, a lot of criticism of Finland’s head of government seems to have appeared after the party video. Scandinavia expert Weichert has a clear theory on this: “I think it’s simple, we don’t know it like that in Germany […]I don’t think a case like Sanna Marin has ever happened. […] We always know politicians as a bit uptight, very stuffy, very orderly, correct.” The head of government, who also uses social media extensively privately, does not fit into the image of the Germans. At the same time, he warns starEditor but also before “that she mixes the private too much with her office and maybe has to be a little more careful.”
Nevertheless, Weichert has hope that we will soon have a wave of young politicians and thus a new generation of young heads of government in Europe.
