In Russia, the prominent opposition politician and former mayor of the city of Yekaterinburg, Yevgeny Roisman, has been arrested.
He is accused of spreading false news about the Russian army in the course of Moscow’s war of aggression against Ukraine, as reported by the Internet portal e1.ru. Accordingly, he faced up to ten years in prison. Roisman is one of the last harsh critics of the Kremlin still at large.
The media also showed a video clip in which Roisman announced his arrest. He was taken away. The 59-year-old has a charity foundation and icon museum in Yekaterinburg. During a raid on the relief fund’s premises and other offices of Roisman, armed and masked security forces confiscated documents, computers and other technology, the Russian state news agency Tass reported. The foundation management announced that no search warrant had been submitted.
As a former mayor of the city east of the Ural Mountains, Roisman still has many supporters there. There was initially no official information from the Russian authorities about the arrest.

Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin decided to mark the “six months” of war against Ukraine by demonstratively arresting “the last opposition politician still free,” said Kira Jarmysch, the spokeswoman for the imprisoned Kremlin opponent Alexei Navalny. There are other opposition figures, though not with Roisman’s level of prominence and popularity.
The arrest of every other member of the opposition shows once again that those in power have a problem with public opinion, said political expert Abbas Galliamov. “More and more people are listening to the opposition, which is why they can no longer be left free,” Gallyamov wrote in his blog on the Telegram news channel. The day was probably chosen specifically to cover up public attention to the six-month war and possible criticism of it through the arrest of a well-known politician.
