The United States has been sending arms to Ukraine one after the other for months. Now an extra large aid package follows, as a message of long-term support.
The US government has promised Ukraine billions in aid to defend against the Russian war of aggression. US President Joe Biden announced support for Kyiv in the amount of almost three billion dollars (around three billion euros) in Washington.
“This will allow Ukraine to acquire air defense systems, artillery systems and ammunition, unmanned air defense systems and radars in order to be able to defend itself in the long term,” Biden said. Russia had started the war against its neighbor six months ago to the day. Ukraine also celebrated the 31st anniversary of its independence from the Soviet Union on Wednesday.
Biden congratulated Ukraine on this anniversary. This shows “that Ukraine is proud to be a sovereign and independent nation – and will remain so”. The United States is determined to support the Ukrainian people in their struggle to defend their sovereignty.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the people of Ukraine have shown they will do whatever it takes to protect their homes, families, fellow citizens, country and independence. The US has shown that it will stand by the country for as long as necessary.
$10.6 billion in US military aid to Kyiv since January 2021
In recent months, the Americans have already launched various aid packages for Ukraine on a large scale and in quick succession. Just last Friday, the US government announced that it would provide Kyiv with additional military aid of around 775 million US dollars (around 777 million euros). US military support for Ukraine had thus increased to a total of US$10.6 billion (around €10.6 billion) since the beginning of Biden’s term in office. Most of the aid has been flowing since the beginning of the war at the end of February.
So far, the focus of American support has primarily been on delivering arms and ammunition to the front in Ukraine as quickly as possible. Previous arms deliveries from the United States include numerous heavy weapons, such as howitzers and multiple rocket launchers. With the new commitment, Biden now emphasized the focus on a long-term strengthening of the Ukrainian military.
The US has plunked down massive sums of money in support of Ukraine. In May, the US Congress approved funds of almost 40 billion dollars (40 billion euros) for this purpose. About half of the total amount went to the defense sector. Billions more were budgeted to, among other things, replenish US stockpiles of military equipment sent to Ukraine. Other funds were earmarked for humanitarian aid to refugees from Ukraine, among others.
