The Iranian Ministry of Sports said that more than 40 years later, Iranian women will again be able to watch national football in local stadiums.
About 30% of the 28,000 tickets for the match between Ricardo Sa Pinto’s Esteghlal and Mes Kerman will be made available to the female audience as a test of this debut.
If the assessment is positive, the measure will subsequently be extended to the entire country.
In 2019, and in the face of pressure from FIFA, a female audience was already allowed to play international matches for the national team, the first time since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
Qualification for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar is in question, in which about four thousand women were able to watch the challenge with Cambodia, in an area isolated from the rest of the public, between police and medical personnel.
The clearance came after international media reports that 29-year-old Sahar Khodayar died after setting herself on fire outside a courthouse in Tehran, outraged that she could go to jail for trying to sneak into a football stadium dressed as a man.
