Blue and yellow flags and clothing: This is how demonstrators in Germany express their solidarity with the country attacked by Russia on the occasion of Ukraine’s national holiday.
Six months after Russian troops invaded Ukraine, thousands protested against the war in German cities. In Berlin, after prayers at the Memorial Church on Breitscheidplatz, a crowd headed towards the Brandenburg Gate. Several of them waved Ukrainian flags, wore them over their shoulders or wore blue and yellow clothing. According to the police, around 3,500 people came together. The organizers had expected up to 10,000 demonstrators.
Similar actions took place in other cities. According to the police, several thousand people demonstrated in Frankfurt for solidarity with Ukraine. In Mainz, people formed a chain across the Theodor Heuss Bridge to show their solidarity.
The association Vitsche called for the event on Wednesday in Berlin. Before the protest, its board member Vlada Vorobiova said: “Today is a day of great horror – it’s been six months since Russia attacked all of Ukraine – but at the same time a day of great freedom, of independence, for which Ukraine stands and fights.”
Ukraine also celebrated the 31st anniversary of its independence from the Soviet Union on Wednesday. On August 24, 1991, the then Soviet Republic of Ukraine declared its independence after the failed coup by conservative forces against Secretary General Mikhail Gorbachev. His successor in the Kremlin, Vladimir Putin, ordered the attack on the neighboring country six months ago.
