The people have made a life-threatening journey behind them. Sea rescuers are now allowed to head for a port in Sicily with them.
The Regensburg aid organization Sea-Eye is allowed to head for a port on the Italian island of Sicily with almost 30 people rescued in the Mediterranean. The sea rescuers wrote that on Sunday on Twitter.
According to the organization, the operations management decided on Thursday evening to bring the people to safety and head for Sicily. Two heavily pregnant women and four babies would have to be treated immediately ashore and medically. According to Sea-Eye, the Italian coast guard initially did not take over the coordination and referred to the German authorities. The ship is now allowed to dock in Porto Empedocle.
The migrants and refugees often leave the coasts of Libya or Tunisia. They mostly want to reach Italy and thus the EU in the hope of a better life. The crossing in the often overcrowded boats is dangerous. The barges are sometimes unable to maneuver or capsize in the open sea. According to the UN, 1,100 migrants have died in the central Mediterranean this year.
