The counting of votes in the general elections in Angola has already begun at polling stations in the Angolan capital, the country’s largest political center, after voting officially closed at 17:00 local time.

The process of counting votes takes place under the leadership of the chairmen of the polling stations and in the presence of secretaries and delegates on the lists.

As with most polling stations, the vote count was also held early this Wednesday at polling station 00070, located in Colégio Gregório Semedo, Mayanga district, Lusa confirmed.

At least three polling stations were established in this assembly, and more than 230 voters exercised their right to vote in each polling station.

After the votes have been counted, the leaders of each table and the delegates of the list must sign the minutes, which will be posted at this meeting, indicating the preferences of the voters.

Voting officially began at 07:00 (same time in Lisbon). A total of 13,338 polling stations were provided at home and abroad.

The fifth general election in Angola perpetuates the dispute between the country’s two main parties, the MPLA (government) and UNITA (opposition), which are trying to win a majority of the 220 seats in the National Assembly.

Joao Lourenço, the current president, is running for a second term, and his main opponent is Adalberto Costa Junior.

In total, eight political parties are running, trying to win the votes of 14.4 million voters.

The electoral process, which involves some 1,300 national and international observers, has been criticized by the opposition for lack of transparency.
