In May 2019 I was able to accompany the then Chancellor Angela Merkel to the Bundeswehr soldiers in Mali. We flew in a Bundeswehr A 400 M, well protected against fire. The deployment in Mali is considered particularly dangerous. We ended up in the city of Gao in well over 40 degrees. For the way to the German Army’s Camp Castor, we climbed into armored vehicles with air conditioning. It was like a fridge on wheels.
