Racism: Charges brought after racist attack on youth

In the Berlin district of Prenzlauer Berg, a young woman of Turkish origin was racially accosted, beaten and kicked at the beginning of February. Charges have now been brought against three women and three men.

Almost six months after a racist attack on a young woman of Turkish origin in Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg, the public prosecutor’s office has filed charges. According to a report by “Spiegel”, the allegations are insult, threat and dangerous bodily harm.

Three women and three men between the ages of 24 and 54 are accused. According to the report, the Tiergarten district court is now examining whether the charges will be admitted. According to a spokesman for the public prosecutor’s office, the charges were filed at the end of July. He could not provide any further information.

At the beginning of February, the then 17-year-old was racistly abused, beaten and kicked by three women and three men. In a video from the hospital, she later reported the incident, sometimes crying. There was a lot of reaction on the internet.

The act caused a stir in February – not least because the police initially misrepresented the cause of the attack and wrote in a message that the conflict was triggered by the fact that the woman had not worn a corona mask.

The German Press Agency also adopted this original description of the police in a report and also did not mention the young woman’s references to racist insults already mentioned in the police report.
