Men are significantly more expensive for society than women! Gender stereotypes are responsible for this. How exactly are prejudices related to the additional costs? And how to solve this problem?
Our society is characterized by a patriarchal system. This has an impact on many areas of our lives and promotes, among other things, the stereotypical distribution of roles between the sexes. In the 348th episode of the “Today Important” podcast, Michel Abdollahi speaks to economist Boris von Heese. He has written the book What Men Cost: The High Price of Patriarchy and explains how he came to the conclusion that men cost society about 63 billion euros more than women. He used publicly available figures for this, so it’s important to note: “In many areas there is no data at all. For example in the area of tax evasion, there are many studies that say that men have worse tax morale than women .” There are no figures in detail, so he kept his hands off it. Accordingly, one can assume that the actual additional costs are significantly higher.
No hatred of men, but concern for men
The cause of this difference in costs is patriarchy, explains Boris von Heesen. “Ultimately, both men and women, we are victims of a gender system in which we are shaped, in which we grow up.” Among other things, this means that men grow up thinking that they have to be the stronger sex. It is a matter of interpretation whether exactly this body of thought has led to men being more likely to be criminals, but von Heesen speculates that these role stereotypes are to blame. At the same time, he emphasizes: “I actually find it outrageous that nobody thinks about the fact that we have a gender imbalance in socially harmful areas of life.” By that he doesn’t just mean crime, but also that in his work with drug help he mostly met men and nobody talks about it.

The solution to the problem: “We have to get to these role models”
However, Boris von Heesen also says that these figures do not make men bad people, but simply show that they are much more strongly influenced by the social system. “I think it’s important that I keep critically questioning my role as a man in society,” says von Heesen, because that’s the only way to change something. But the development is also positive. “A lot has changed, there are many more opportunities for young people to develop.” He cites social media as an example, because this medium shapes the image of masculinity in a powerful way. “In the end it’s about justice. Justice in the sense that women have every opportunity to develop in their lives, professionally and family, but also men professionally and family.”
