Extremism: 30 years after Lichtenhagen: demonstration for consequences

“The political consequences of the riots are still relevant”: An alliance of associations and initiatives mobilized throughout Germany for the demonstration in Lichtenhagen – around 3,600 people came together.

According to the police, around 3,600 people came together in the Rostock district of Lichtenhagen for a demonstration against racism. The occasion is the racist riots in the district 30 years ago.

Imam-Jonas Dogsch, spokesman for the demo organizers, said the political consequences of the riots are still relevant. The tightening of the asylum law decided thereafter de facto abolished the right to asylum. Refugees are also still excluded from social participation. Dogsch explained that there is also the danger that people will come together on important anniversaries, make a speech and lay flowers – and then everyone will go home and forget the topic again.

An alliance of clubs and initiatives had mobilized all over Germany for the demonstration in Lichtenhagen and expected thousands of participants in advance. A move with several rallies is on the agenda.

In August 1992, to the applause of thousands of onlookers, local residents and neo-Nazis attacked the central reception center for asylum seekers and a dormitory for Vietnamese workers and partly set them on fire. The riots are considered to be the worst racist attacks in post-war German history up to that point.
