USA: Trump raid: judge wants to use special representatives

The former US President took secret documents with him when he left the White House – the FBI got them back. A neutral examiner could now be consulted on Trump’s lawsuit.

A judge in the US state of Florida has announced that she may appoint a special representative to review the FBI’s investigation into ex-President Donald Trump. “The Court hereby announces its preliminary intention to appoint a special counsel in this matter,” Judge Aileen Cannon said in an order. The Republican filed a lawsuit last Monday to defend himself against the actions of the authorities. Among other things, he wants to achieve the appointment of a neutral auditor.

After the release of new details about the investigation by the US Department of Justice on Friday, Trump renewed his request. A so-called “special master” should oversee the investigation of the documents seized during the operation at the Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, according to a motion filed by his lawyers with the court. Until then, “the US government should no longer be involved in examining the documents.” Judge Cannon said a hearing would be held on Thursday.

Cannon was appointed a judge by Trump during his 2020 presidency.
