Two US warships cross the Taiwan Strait for the first time since Nancy Pelosi’s visit. The maneuver comes amid ongoing tensions between Beijing and Taipei, but also between Beijing and Washington.
Two US warships crossed the Taiwan Strait on Sunday. As the US Navy’s 7th Fleet announced on Twitter, the operation of the guided missile cruisers USS Antietam and USS Chancellorsville demonstrates “the United States’ commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific”.
It is the first time since US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan that US forces have sent warships through the Taiwan Straits. The People’s Republic of China responded to the US politician’s visit in early August with military maneuvers lasting several days. After the visit, China’s army held its largest military maneuvers to date in the waters around the island and also fired missiles. Taiwan also held exercises and presented new fighter jets.
China regards Taiwan as a breakaway territory
The Ministry of Defense in Taipei said in a statement on Sunday that it was closely monitoring the passage of the two US warships and found no unusual activity.
Since the split between China and Taiwan in 1949, Beijing has viewed the island as a breakaway territory that it wants to reunite with the mainland – if necessary by military force. The Russian war of aggression against Ukraine has raised fears that Beijing could use a similar approach in its dealings with Taiwan.
