Left-wing guerrilla organizations, right-wing paramilitaries and crime syndicates are fighting for control of entire regions. Colombia’s President Petro hopes that the conflict will now be finally settled.
The new Colombian President Gustavo Petro has called on all armed groups in the South American country to hold peace talks and a ceasefire.
“I propose that the country’s armed groups begin the dialogue with a cessation of hostilities,” said the left-wing politician during a visit to the Antioquia department. The High Commissioner for Peace, Iván Danilo Rueda, called on the gangs to publicly declare their readiness for a ceasefire.
In Colombia, left-wing guerrilla organizations, right-wing paramilitaries and crime syndicates are fighting for control of entire regions and illegal businesses. Above all, community representatives, trade unionists, representatives of indigenous communities and environmentalists are repeatedly targeted by the gangs. During the election campaign, Colombia’s first left-wing President Petro promised to start talks with all armed groups in order to finally settle the internal conflict. The government recently announced the resumption of peace talks with the guerrilla organization ELN.
For more than 50 years, a civil war raged in Colombia between left-wing rebels, right-wing paramilitaries and the military. 220,000 people died and millions were displaced. After the 2016 peace agreement between the government and the largest guerrilla group FARC, the security situation initially improved. However, many fighters have now gone underground again and joined criminal gangs.
