Climate activists: “Last generation” announces further climate protests

Sometimes they stick to the road, sometimes to works of art in museums, we’re talking about the activists of the “last generation”. The group plans to start new activities soon.

The “Last Generation” climate activists are planning a new wave of protests this fall. “We will start the next phase of action again at the beginning of October and do these blockade actions again,” announced the activist Lina Eichler in an interview with the German Press Agency. “We’re mobilizing until we reach critical mass, these thousands of people.”

The group was formed after a climate hunger strike in Berlin exactly a year ago and has been organizing motorway blockades for months. Activists stick themselves to the road, which has caused long traffic jams and annoyance for motorists. In addition, valves on oil and gas lines were turned off. Most recently, protesters have also stuck to works of art in museums. At the weekend they disrupted the top game in the Bundesliga. The aim of the actions is an immediate move away from oil, coal and gas, the combustion of which releases a lot of climate-damaging carbon dioxide.

The group receives financial support from the Climate Emergency Fund in California. The fund makes “strategic investments in new organizations like the last generation that want to disrupt everyday life in order to put massive pressure on governments,” said Margaret Klein Salamon, head of the foundation. How much money the group gets remains open. A total of almost three million dollars flowed to 33 organizations last year. Money for the foundation was donated by Aileen Getty, granddaughter of oil magnate J. Paul Getty, among others.
