Former minister opposes construction of a new airport on the South Bank

Former PS minister João Cravinho said that the airport on the south bank of the Tagus “is an imposition of large financial interests” but “there is hardly any other solution than that of Montijo”.

In an interview with Público, the current civil engineer stated that the construction of the new airport should take place in Ota, as its location in the municipality of Alenquer ensures greater territorial cohesion of the country. According to the former minister, the construction of an airport on the south bank of the Tagus is “the best choice that anyone who has an idea of the possible role of Portugal in the European Union can come up with.”

João Cravinho went even further and also mentioned that “the advertised model of territorial development is a model based on two main axes: a very powerful axis that goes from Poseiran to Badajoz, and another interesting axis that fascinates big business and great interests, which is Alcochete-Comporta”.
