Taiwan’s leader on Tuesday called on the island’s military units to remain calm in the face of China’s military maneuvers near the territory, noting that Taipei would not allow Beijing to provoke a conflict.
Earlier this month, after U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan – the most high-profile U.S. visit to the island in 25 years – Beijing launched an unprecedented military exercise that included rocket launches and the use of live fire. For nearly a week, the People’s Liberation Army maintained a virtual sea and air blockade of the territory.
The Chinese army also sends planes and warships near Taiwan almost daily.
