“Thank you, Dr. Martha Temido”: PS reacts to the resignation of the Minister of Health

Porfirio Silva of the Socialist Party had already reacted to the resignation of Marta Temido on Tuesday, thanking her for her work in her term, saying it would be a “miracle” if everything always went well, and emphasizing that it is always necessary to “keep doing” .

“Thank you, Dr. Marta Temido,” he began on behalf of the party, emphasizing that “we must continue the work that is being done.”

According to Porfirio Silva, “the minister herself will know that she did not leave all the work done”, and highlighted in particular the “terrible years” of the covid-19 pandemic, given that Marta Temido was present “every day, every hour, like another one essential worker.

“It was good, as recognized by international institutions. Portugal has shown one of the best global performance in the fight against the pandemic,” he praised.

The deputy and member of the PS National Secretariat also stressed that Martha Temido “belonged to the PS governments that reversed the cycle of declining investment in SNS.”

“Thank you Dr. Marta Temido, these are the words that the Portuguese and PS have prepared for you,” he said, adding that the minister has “an excellent mandate and he has given everything.”

Asked if the PS recognizes the shortcomings in these Health Minister mandates, Porfirio Silva acknowledged that “no government or no ruler can do everything that can be done for the country.”

“You must always continue to do this, the path has been paved, it would be an extraordinary miracle if everything always went perfectly amidst circumstances (…) Of course, there is still more to do, the minister herself has been working on new ways of organizing the SNA,” he stressed.

Asked if Temido’s biggest shortcoming was the inability to reorganize the SNS, Porfirio Silva once again recalled the years of the covid-19 pandemic.

“Obviously, some things that the minister wanted to do could not be done at that time, at least not so quickly. services dictates what we can do at any moment, we are not the ones who reject reality,” he defended.

When asked if PS thought Marte Temido would be able to stay in government, Porfirio Silva conveyed this assessment to the minister himself and the prime minister.

“They realized that in these circumstances it is better to interrupt this mandate, which is already quite long,” he stressed.

The vice-president of the PS bench also declined to comment on the possible successors of Marta Temido, saying that this choice is entirely up to António Costa.

“Of course the prime minister will take into account what is needed to continue the work that has been done, the ministers are not working alone, they are working in a team with the rest of the government and with the prime minister who is coordinating the reorganization of the SNS in development, and this is certainly will be taken into account,” the leader of the socialists confirmed.

The resignation of the Minister of Health, Martha Temido, is the first “weight loss” in the XXIII Constitutional Government, which came to power exactly five months ago, on March 30.

Martha Temido submitted her resignation because she felt that she “no longer had the conditions” to hold the position.

The resignation, already accepted by the prime minister, was announced at dawn, but on Tuesday morning, an official source from António Costa’s office told Lusa that the replacement of the health minister “won’t be quick”, adding that the head of government would like the official to complete the process of determining the new SNS executive leadership.

Marta Temido assumed her duties as Minister of Health in October 2018, succeeding Adalberto Campos Fernandez, and has served as minister under the last three leaders, led by socialist António Costa.
