STORY: The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) team en route to inspect the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant arrived in the city of the same name in southern Ukraine on Wednesday. From there, the experts are to continue to the power plant, which is about 70 kilometers away in the Russian-controlled municipality of Enerhodar. IAEA chief Rafael Grossi explained the aim of the planned inspection visit: “To be absolutely clear: my mission is a technical mission. It’s a mission to prevent a nuclear accident and preserve the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, not just Ukraine. That’s what we’re concentrating on.” Russian troops control Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, which, however, continues to be operated by Ukrainian technicians. “As you know, the site is part of Ukraine, currently occupied by Russian forces. But for us it is clear that it is a Ukrainian institution. As long as we are here, the authority, the legal competence for our stay clearly rests on the security agreement that we have with Ukraine.” Russia and Ukraine accuse each other of shelling the area. This fuels fears of a nuclear catastrophe. After lengthy negotiations, the inspectors of the Vienna-based IAEA first traveled to Kyiv and set off for the nuclear power plant on Wednesday morning.
