The PCP urged the government this Wednesday to take more than “palliative and welfare measures” to deal with the rising cost of living for the Portuguese, commenting on the National Statistical Institute’s (INE) inflation estimate in August.
In a statement, Communist leader Vasco Cardoso said inflation of 9.0% in August, according to the INE’s “quick assessment”, “reflects an accelerated loss of purchasing power, a rapid devaluation of wages and pensions, and the impoverishment of vast sections” of the population.
“What is needed is not palliative and social measures, but an increase in wages and pensions to restore purchasing power,” argued a member of the Political Commission of the Central Committee of the PKP.
From a partisan point of view, it is also necessary to regulate prices and tax the profits of economic groups in order to “prevent speculation” and rely on national production as a method of mitigating foreign dependence.

Vasco Cardoso argued that “not only is inflation soaring”, but that the profits of economic groups associated with energy, large distribution, banking and telecommunications are “reaching impressive levels”, but that they are built “on the basis of speculation and the exacerbation of exploitation”.
The PKP accuses PS, PSD, CDS-PP, Chega and IL of acting “against the interests of the workers”.
