Luis Montenegro says ex-Gorbachev tore down walls and built peace

SDP President Luis Montenegro said that former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, who died Tuesday at the age of 91, broke down walls, built peace and freed millions of people.

Gorbachev “broke down walls, built peace and opened freedom to millions of people. With him, we wouldn’t have a war in Ukraine today, ”Montenegro said on the social network Twitter.

“History leaves him a page of honor. The world, like us, is indebted to him with respect and gratitude,” the SDP president said on Twitter.

Former leader of the Soviet Union Mikhail Gorbachev died today at the age of 91, Russian news agencies TASS, RIA Novosti and Interfax reported, citing the Central Clinical Hospital.

Gorbachev’s office reported that the former head of state was being treated in a hospital, but so far no details have been released.

As the last leader of the Soviet Union, Mikhail Gorbachev fought unsuccessfully to save the fragile empire, but made extraordinary reforms that ended the Cold War.

The former general secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU) initiated a series of changes between 1985 and 1991 that led to the collapse of the authoritarian Soviet state, the liberation of Eastern European peoples from Russian rule, and the end of a decade of nuclear confrontation between East and West.

TASS reports that the ex-head of state will be buried at the Novodevichy cemetery in Moscow, next to his wife.
