Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa expressed his satisfaction this Thursday in Maputo with the peace process led by the government of Mozambique and the Mozambican National Resistance (RENAMO), the main opposition party.
“To express my congratulations on the very positive evolution that has taken place since our previous summit in 2019, in the process of disarmament, demobilization and reintegration” of the armed wing of Renamo, Costa said.
The Portuguese official gave the assessment in a media statement at the end of a courtesy meeting with the President of the Assembly of the Republic of Mozambique, Esperanza Bias.
António Costa noted that progress in stabilizing the political and military situation in the African country “strengthens the internal peace.”
Costa stressed the importance of the Mozambique Parliament in deepening the process of establishing peace, democracy and cooperation with Portugal.
“In democratic states, there are relations not only between governments, but also between parliaments,” he stressed.
For her part, the President of the Assembly of the Republic of Mozambique thanked Portugal for the support it has provided in various areas, emphasizing its assistance in combating armed groups that carry out attacks in the province of Cabo Delgado, in the northern region, and in providing humanitarian assistance to victims of natural disasters.
“Portugal was with Mozambique in the most difficult moments, for example, in the fight against terrorism and natural disasters,” Esperanza Bias said.
Bias also noted Portugal’s assistance in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, highlighting the exceptional nature of the support at a time when the European country has also been severely affected by the health emergency.
