The Argentine Football Association announced this Friday the suspension of all games scheduled for that day and expressed “a strong rejection of what happened to Vice President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner”.
“We appeal to society as a whole, warning that any violence is not an option,” the association said in a Twitter post.
Argentine President Alberto Fernandez said there was an assassination attempt on Vice President Cristina Kirchner this Thursday that failed only because the firearm failed to fire.
Supporters of the vice president have been gathering on the streets around her home in the Argentine capital Buenos Aires since last week, when a prosecutor demanded a 12-year prison sentence for Kirchner, as well as a life ban from office. in the context of a case of alleged corruption in public works when he was President of Argentina (2007–2015).
The man, whose identity has not been officially released by the authorities, was detained moments after the incident.
The state news agency Télam identified him as a Brazilian citizen.
Tensions have been rising in the Recoleta neighborhood of Buenos Aires since the weekend, when supporters of the vice president clashed with police in the streets around her apartment after security forces tried to demobilize protesters.
Despite open questions, government officials were quick to characterize Thursday’s incident as an assassination attempt.
