US Ambassador to Russia John Sullivan resigned this Sunday and is stepping down at a time of great tension between the two countries.
According to the US Embassy, quoted CNN International“U.S. Ambassador to the Russian Federation John J. Sullivan completed his term as U.S. Ambassador today and departed Moscow.”
“After his departure, he will retire from a career in public service that spanned four decades, when he served as assistant secretary of state and in the departments of justice, defense and commerce,” the US embassy said in a statement.
The embassy added that Elisabeth Rude will take over until a successor takes over.
Sullivan, the U.S. ambassador to Moscow since December 2019—nearly three years ago—is part of a period of heightened tensions between the U.S. and Russia not seen in decades. Sullivan oversaw the embassy as it faced increasing restrictions imposed by the Russian government.
