Afghanistan: Two workers killed at Russian embassy in Kabul

A heavy explosion occurred in front of the Russian embassy in Kabul on Monday while people were waiting for their visas. Several people die. Moscow condemned the act as a terrorist attack.

Two employees of the Russian embassy were killed in an attack in the Afghan capital Kabul. This was reported by the Russian Foreign Ministry on Monday.

It is clearly about a terrorist attack that Russia condemns, said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov on Monday. “And of course the most important thing now is to get information from the ground, what happened to our representatives, our diplomats.”

One civilian killed, ten others injured

A spokesman for the Taliban also reported to the German Press Agency that at least one civilian had been killed in the heavy explosion in front of the Russian embassy. Ten others were injured. The Afghan police also speak of a suicide bomber. Security forces followed the man before he could reach his destination. That’s when the explosion happened, police said. The Russian Embassy is located in the Darul Aman district.

The road to the diplomatic mission was blocked after the explosion by security forces from the Taliban government, a resident of the dpa reported. According to reports in the Afghan media, the explosion happened while many people were waiting in front of the embassy for their visas. Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov announced that the protection of the embassy would be increased.

There were rumors of explosions near the Russian embassy on Saturday and Sunday. A spokesman for the Taliban rejected this when asked by the dpa on Sunday.

The militant Islamist Taliban have been back in power in Afghanistan since August last year after international troops withdrew. Since then, there have been multiple attacks on civilians by the terrorist militia Islamic State (IS). Along with the national resistance group “National Resistance Front”, this is one of the main armed opponents of the Taliban.
